Soon after the main contingents of the Central Red Army started the Long March, the Sixth Corps and the Second Corps that had been sent to find out the way joined forces and then they had a controversy with the Military Commission of Chinese Revolution controlled by Be Gu and Otto Braun over the direction of strategic movement and unified action. Focuses of the controversy were: Would the two corps act together and be put under unified command or act separately under direct command of the Military Commission? Would they concentrate their forces and march into Northwest Hunan for offensive operations or would the Sixth Corps alone go to West Hunan and build up a Soviet area there? The outcome of the controversy that had a direct bearing on the success and failure of the Long March laid an important solid foundation for the expansion of the Second and Sixth Corps, for their better support for the strategic shift of the Central Red Army, for the creation and development of the revolutionary bases in the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou, for the formation of the strategic pattern of the three main forces of the Red Army, for the thwarting of Zhang Guotac's conspiracy to split the Party and the Red Army and for the final victory of the Long March.
