Based on the theory of language embodiment proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (1999), this article studies the effects of linguistic embodiment upon the translator' s cognitive ability. Comparing the C-E translations of one text by two groups of students with different language embodiment backgrounds, it examines the way these students diverged in their understanding the text by paying special attention to their differing ways of recognizing and handling zero pronouns and modal words. The paper then compares the C-E translations of another text by a group of Chinese students and an established translator. By analyzing the mistakes made by the studenttranslators in question, it further explains the cognitive effects which language embodiment tends to produce upon translators. Drawing from these studies, the paper discusses possible ways to improve the teaching of translation in China.
