Objective: To investigate the effect of atorvastatin on endothelium-dependent vasodilatation function in patients with essential hypertension (EH) complicated by hyperlipidemia. Methods: A total of 168 patients with EH complicated by hyperlipidemia were divided randomly into conventional therapeutic group (control) and atorvastatin treated group. The levels of blood lipid and C-reaction protein (CRP) were measured before and twelve weeks after treatment. Vascular endothelial function was assessed in the brachial artery by high-resolution ultrasound technique in form of flow-mediated dilatation during reactive hyperemia and after sublingual glyceryl trinitrate. Results: Flow-mediated dilatation parameters and the levels of blood lipid and CRP were obviously improved compared with those before treatment in conventional treated group and atorvastatin therapeutic group (P〈0.05 and P〈0.01). After 12 weeks' atorvastatin therapy, the comparison of the results between the two groups showed significant difference (P 〈 0. 05). Conclusion: Based on the conventional therapy, atorvastatin could further improve vascular endothelial function and resist inflammation of the arteriosclerosis in patients with EH complicated by hyperlipidemia.
