Pigment epithelium-derived factor(PEDF) secreted from human retinal epithelium cells is a potent angiogenic inhibitor in the mammalian eyes. By excluding aberrant blood vessels from ocular tissues, PEDF plays an important role to keep normal mammalian eyes with visual acuity. Angiogenesis in the retina underlies the pathology of diabetic retinopathy (DR). PEDF inhibits angiogenic inducers and prevents pathological vascular growth to postpone the pathogenesis of DR. Whereas the lower level of it may be related to the angiogenesis in DR. Its mechanism of action is still in exploration. Recent studies have shown that the curative effect of exogenous PEDF and gene therapies is direct and significant. PEDF may be a useful therapeutic agent for angiogenic disease. Further study of PEDF function may provide a new idea for angiogenic disease in clinic.
