Difference Between Classics and History:WANG Kai-yun's Basic Attitude towards The Spring and Autumn Annals

“经”、“史”之别是王闿运《春秋》学的一个基本概念。他认定《春秋》及《公羊传》、《梁传》是“经”不是“史”,在“义”不在“事”,而《左传》为记事之书。在此前提下,王运展开了对《春秋》学的研究,沿着公羊家之“义例”解经风格,努力阐释经典之微言大义,以达通经致用之目的。

The difference between classics and history is a basic concept in WANG Kai- yun＇s study of The Spring and Autumn AnnaLs. He believed that The Spring and Autumn Annals as well as Gong Yang Zhuan and GU Hang Zhuan are not histories but classics while Zuo Zhuan is a book of events. On this premise, WANG Kai - yun began his study of The Spring and Autumn Annals and tried to interpret the principles of the classics so as to use it properly.
