郭嵩焘在出使英法期间,利用各种机会认真考察了西方政府的国际经贸政策,其中包括西方的航运政策、殖民活动、关税调控、“万国公法”、国际金融、国际商贸、领事的经济职能等等,对西方经贸知识在中国的早期传播作出了突出贡献。

When he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Britain and France, GUO Song- tao made various chances to inspect the policies of international economy and trade of western government, including shipping policy, colonization activities, regulation and control of customs duties, law of nations, international finance and business, economic functions of consul and so on. He has made a great contribution to the spread of knowledge of western economy and trade in China.
