汤因比曾指出历史的本质在于“变形”，犹如海神普罗泰乌斯不断改变自己的形状以对付绑架者梅奈劳斯预示命运的要求。当代建筑历史也不例外，对于我们身处其中的当代建筑进行观察，重要的并不在于接近“客观真实”的可能，而是反映出我们对当代建筑的认识以及当代建筑自身的知识领域。
A.Tanynbee once mentioned that the essence of history was protean, just as Proteus changed his shape endlessly to refuse to faretell the fate of abductor Merelaus. it is the same to the history of contemporary architecture. Probing into the contemporary architectural works, we could not reach historical events, but could reflect our recognition and understarding of it .
