The walsh Bay redevelopment project in Sydney. Australia inmated in 1994 and now in final stages of completion, demonstrates the dramatic possibilifies of adaptive reuse of historic structures at an urban scale.Formerly a key component of Sydney's port facilities, theWalsh Bay wharves and associated bond stores-located at the tip of a sandstone headland just west of Sydney Cove-became obsolete in the 1970s and were slated for demolition. However,as a result of State government initiatives and significant public concern,a major develppment consortium has conserve the precinct. The principal challenge of the Walsh Bay project has been conceptual and programmatic-how to introduce human scale and human use to tough industrial structures stripped of their original function. In responding to this challenge, the project has applied principles of adaptive reuse at the scale of a waterfront precinct, combining conservation of historic fabric with strategic demolition and reconstruction in a series of bold moves, which have unlocked the development potential of the sife. The scale and nature of these changes have been tempered by a considered design opproach, which has set the precise language of modernism against the robust forms and materials of the industrial buildings. The result is an urban precinct charged with creative tension between the old and the new.
