The slip risk of trans femoral amputees while walking on a level surface was investigated using ten healthy male subjects and six unilateral trans femoral male amputees. Each of the subjects was required to walk three times on a dry surface at a self selected comfortable pace. The kinematic and kinetic data were recorded in each trial, The peak required coefficient of friction (RCOFPEAK) and the contribution of the lateral force to the RCOFPEAK were calculated using ground reaction force data. These two parameters were then compared between the two groups using a one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), The study shows that trans-femoral amputees face significantly greater slip risk than healthy subjects during level walking with the increase of the body swing in the frontal plane obviously causing the increased ground reaction force in the lateral direction.
