This study employs a method in experimental phonetics to investigate the use of tones in 45 Chinese EFL learners, read speech. The study, which is based on O, Connor and Arnold,s (1973) descriptions of tones of English, takes as the norm for comparison the recorded spoken data from 8 English-speaking British university students. The findings indicate that most of the learners knew how to use the primary tones to a satisfactory extent, but some problems prevailed in their use of the secondary tones, especially in the use of the level tone and the falling tone. Implications are discussed for L2 teaching of intonation and for how EFL learners should convey their intended meanings through the proper use of different tones.
