Pusan is South Korea's second largest city. Home to some 6 million people, it is the gateway to the Korean peninsula from the south. Its harbor, one of the ten largest ports in the world, has a centuries-old history as a port for fishing, shipping and industry However, this relatively new port has been determined inadequate to serve the needs of a shipping industry that requires deeper drafts and greater turning radii for everdarger container ships. In response to this need, a new port is being constructed some 20 kilometers to the west, offering the city an opportunity to develop a new vision for the soon-to-be-obsolete old port.
