The Same Goal Achieved by Different Means——comparison between the image of Dai Yu and That of Zi Ji

林黛玉和紫姬分别是我国古典文学经典《红楼梦》和日本平安时代文学巨著《源氏物语》中塑造的最具艺术魅力的女性形象之一。她们貌美如花,博学多才,对爱情或婚姻的追求始终不渝、忠贞不贰;一个孤高傲世,追求“知己”爱情,具有个性解放和自由的思想以及反叛精神,为封建社会所不容,终至香消玉殒;一个贞淑娴静、温柔敦厚、“众善皆备”具有真正大家风范。作为传统封建道德的信奉者和追随者,最终也难脱罗网,成了封建礼教的殉葬品。两人精神气质迥异,追求幸福的方式差别很大,结局却如此地相似,都如此地凄惨,揭示了封建社会妇女的悲惨命运。

Lin Daiyu and Zi Ji are the two most charming artistic women images moulded respectively in the Chinese classic works Dream of Red Chamber and in the great Japanese literature works Genshi Mo- nogafali in the Japanese Safe Era. They both were very beautiful, learned and versatile. They pursued love or marriage consistently and loyally. Lin Daiyu was proud and aloof. She longed for bosom friends＂ love and had individual liberation, free thought and rebellious spirit, which were not allowed in the feudal society and resulted in the passing away of the beauty. Zi Ji was chaste, gentle, refined and honest. She had all the virtues a will-bred girl could have. Yet as a believer and follower of feudal ethics, she was unable to escape the feudal net and became a feudal sacrificial victim in the end. The two women had different spiritual makings and the ways they pursued happiness differed greatly, but the miserable results they had were so similar to each other and it revealed the miserable destiny of women in feudal times.
