Objective The study is to evaluate the effect of measles laboratory network in speeding up measles control. Methods We analyzed the data of the measles laboratory network during 1999 2004. Results From 1999 to 2004, the measles surveillance system reported 5474 suspected measles cases. The measles laboratory network had detected 4 560 cases. The positive rate of the measles IgM antibody is 49.06 %, the rubella IgM antibody is 14.78 %. In 2003 and 2004, when the laboratory network received specimen and detected in three days, the ratio is 73.60% ( 1701/2311 ). During 2001-2004, the municipal measles laboratory network detected 763 blind sera specimen. The identical rate is 97.25 %. During 2001 -2004, after provincial measles laboratory detected 730 specimen repeatedly, the identical rate is 95.80 %. During 2001- 2004, checked by the national measles laboratory, the provincial laboratory got 100 marks each year. The 3 strains of wild measles virus isolated from Hebei Province are H1 gene type. Conclusion The establishment and running of the measles laboratory network played very important role in measles surveillance system. The rate of the laboratory detected, the ratio of the specimen detected in three days and the rate of identical results are in high level, which improved the diagnosis level and quality of the suspected measles cases. The strains of the epidemic wild measles virus are Hi gene type in the past ten years in Hebei Province. The laboratory of the measles virus isolation need be strengthened and improved.
