情态意义是指介于肯定与否定之间的意义,它表达的是说话者对某个命题的主观态度和看法。其表达形式往往是在句子中加入情态动词、情态副词和小句等情态成分。但是在语言的实践中,有些形式为肯定或否定的句式却也可以传达情态意义,有学者称之为零情态句式。而对于这样的句式只有语境才能确定其是否表达了情态意义。

Modal meaning is the meaning between ＂yes＂ and ＂no＂ the intermediate ground between positive and negative polarity. It expresses the speaker＇s attitude to a proposition. It usually uses the modal element such as modal auxiliary, modal adverb and clause formally. However, in the language realization, there exist some sentence forms of positive and negative which can also imply modal meaning. Some researchers called these forms expressions with zero modal element. Only the context can determine whether such an expression expresses modal meaning or not.
