This paper holds that since the 1980s, directors of the fifth and sixth generation are quite different in their imaginations of Chinese culture and the realization of these imaginations in different cinematic styles. These directors, as important elements in the development of contemporary Chinese cinema, have challenged Western cinematic powers represented by Hollywood. This paper focuses on the directors of the two generations and their important cinematic significance and cultural values, analyzes the social and historical reasons for their imaginations, and points further to the idea that, as both inheritors and promoters, directors of the two generations must, on the one hand, maintain their individuality and independence, and on the other, deepen their understanding and interpretation of the Chinese culture, which is not only the key for the cultural junction between the two generations, but also an opportunity for the sixth generation to make more surprising contributions to the Chinese cinema.
