This paper deals with metadiscourse, focusing on issues such as the definition, scope, classification of metadiscourse as well as research methodology. Metadiscourse is a language usage which provides functions such as organizing discourse, expressing writers' viewpoints, and channeling readers' responses. Drawing on the current research, the author divides metadiscourse into lexical, punctuational and visual types, and discusses the characteristics of each type. The author also takes up some controversial issues in lexical metadiscourse such as reference to the topics, classification and functions.
