Bridging is one of the language phenomena that most frequently occur in understanding utterances. There are many different elements that could affect bridging assumption, which is an indispensable process in this type of cases. This paper, based on a contrastive analysis of English and Chinese bridging phenomena, explores the construction of bridging inference and the constraints of encyclopedic knowledge on this process.
