Reseach into Yan Fu's activities in Tianji

严复是中国近代著名的资产阶级启蒙思想家,他在天津生活20年,为北洋水师学堂培养了大批海军人才;在天津《直报》发表政治论文,鼓吹变法;翻译《天演论》,宣传西方资产阶级进化论;创办《国闻报》,推动变法维新运动的发展。严复在天津度过了一生中最辉煌的时期,也因此成为天津近代史上最有影响、最著名的人物之一。

Yan Fu is one of the bourgeois enlightenment thinkers in modem China. During his stay in Tianjin for about two decades, he trained a lot of naval men of ability for Beiyang navy. He issued many political essays in Zhibao beating the drum for democratic revolution of the capitalist class. His translation of Theory of Natural Selection extensively gave publicity to the western bourgeois revolutionary thoughts. He established Guowenbao so as to promote the bourgeois revolution. Yan Fu spent his most brilliant period of his lifetime in Tian Ji, for which he became one of the most influential and famous figures in the modem history of Tianjin.
