在有些哲学教科书中,关于“质是一事物区别于它事物的内部所固有的规定性”这一定义,只注重矛盾特殊性与事物的质的联系,忽视了矛盾普遍性的作用,这在以下几个方面有进一步讨论的必要：从本体论来看,第一,它难以说明不同事物的同源性。第二,难以理解事物之间的转化。从认识论来看,第一,有碍于从整体上把握事物。第二,看不到已有知识在认识事物中的作用。第三,在形式逻辑上也排除了类比的方法。第四,也使事物变得难以表述。因而,质的这一定义,有进一步探讨的必要。
