战时的现实处境使西南联大成为一个崭新的现代主义诗歌发展与成熟的土壤,它的民主、自由、开放的氛围为西南联大现代主义诗人群实践新诗的现代理念提供了场所。战争促使诗人们走出象牙塔与精英话语体系,与社会底层真正融合到一起,反思全民族的灾难和个人独特的生命感受,借鉴现代主义的技法,以诗承担起时代和现实的重负,这种自觉担负显示了一代知识分子在那个风卷云集的时代丰富与痛苦的身影,也将中国现代诗歌的发展推向一个新的艺术高峰。

The Southwest United University in the war prepared the soil for the development and maturity of brand -new modernistic poems. Its democratic, free and open academic atmosphere provided a fine breeding place for modernistic poets＇ practicing their new poetic concepts. The war drove these poets out of their ivory tower and their refined discourse system to interact with the people from the bottom world, and to reflect the disaster of the nation and express their unique feeling towards life. Using the techniques of modernism for reference and with poetic medium taking up the grand mission the times placed on them, these poets displayed the colorful and suffering figures of the intellectuals during the stormy age and it also raised the development of the Chinese modemistic poems to its new height.
