古代中国土地广袤,经济落后,各地人民很少有机会相互交流,方言区极多,系统记载各地方言的韵书几乎没有,即使有韵书,也是零散。方言是语音史的重要组成部分,没有足够的方言史构拟汉语语音史不可能。

Ancient China was broad land with backward economy. Many dialect regions appeared for lack of communication. There was hardly any rhyming dictionary recording systematically dialect of different regions.
