索引具有记录和揭示文献的学术价值与意义,通过索引一方面可以快速地查找出分散在全书各处的细目;另一方面可以钩稽出人物交游关系网及其他较为隐蔽的史料细目。索引的编制规则应当以实用性为目的,灵活运用参见法和区分法使索引简要、完备、明晰。

Index has the valuable and significant function in recording and revealing literature. Through index, people can immediately find out the items spread all over the book. On the other hand, index may sketch out a network for the interpersonal relationship and the somewhat implicit historical facts. The laws governing index compilation should be practical and authors may employ reference and distinction flexibly to make index brief, thorough and clear.
