南宁作为中国一东盟博览会长期举办地,已经成为区域国际性城市。但是,由于南宁的城市规模较小、综合实力较弱、城市功能不够完善,需要通过加强基础设施建设、扩大城市空间、调整产业结构、加快区域一体化、实施城市营销、政府体制创新、经营城市文化、发展与东盟各国的关系等途径,提升区域国际性城市功能。
