The novel Surfacing not only reveals problems of women in contemporary western society, but also reflects the phenomenon of ecological imbalance and destruction of natural environment. Moreover, it offers a way to make women collaborate with nature in resisting patriarchy in efforts to solve the various crisis of survival. Henceforth, the novel can be seen as a real work of Ecological Feminism both in theory and in reality.
