A Textual Research into the Relation Between Qiu Fengjia and Lingdong Tongwen School

丘逢甲创办的岭东同文学堂首开粤东新学的先声,但最先提出在粤东办同文学堂的并非丘逢甲本人,丘逢甲在潮州兴办东文学堂的同时汕头也有一所林仔肩办的同文学堂,潮州、汕头两所新式学堂“半途遽散”后,丘、林等人合力在汕头办起岭东同文学堂,但该学堂也很快因各种原因而停课,直至1901年6月逢甲亲任学堂监督,接掌校务后学校才逐步走上正轨,日益发挥新学的先导作用。

There are many research articles about the relation between Qiu Fengjia and Lingdong Tongwen School, and the motivations and the process of running this school, yet their studies are not meticulous yet diverse. In recent years, the historical documents have newly discovered, and research has been being pushed into more profundity; what is particularly worthy of being mentioned is some file about Dongya Tongwen Club that has been explored in Japan. Therefore, the period of history is increasingly clearer to us. However, the author of this paper believes that, after careful research, there still exist some improprieties and contradictory parts in the research results so far, thus awaiting further exploration.
