University Culture in Conflict and Chinese Intellectuals

大学文化是以学术自由和自治为生命的价值信念系统,此信念系统潜意识地作用于其承载者的行为系统。大学文化冲突是大学发展中不可忽视的力量,其冲突的焦点是学术自由和学术自治。西方大学的学术自治是以学术团体的力量和理性精神来保证的,形成了与中国大学截然不同的学术文化。中国特殊的文化背景下形成了中国知识分子同大学学术文化冲突之间息息相关的特殊关系。中国大学还处于发展的初级阶段,知识人的人格和大学学术自由精神紧密结合在一起,其兴也勃焉,其亡也忽焉。因此,重塑每个现代知识人的独立批判人格才能从根源上缓解当前大学文化的冲突,促使大学向前发展。

Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are at the core of the university culture. The article argues that such value system affects the university＇s operational system as in a subconscious way. The cultural conflict of the university has become a prominent phenomenon and academic freedom and institutional autonomy are the foci of the conflict. Institutional autonomy of western universities is safeguarded by collegiality and rationality which form a markedly different academic culture from the Chinese universities. The organic relationship between Chinese intellectuals and academic conflict of the university is deep rooted in Chinese culture. Chinese universities are still at its early stage of development, and the identification of Chinese intellectuals is closely intertwined with the characteristics of academic freedom. Therefore it is important to reconstruct the critical identification of modern Chinese intellectuals in order to harmonise the conflict of university culture and promote institutional development.
