On the Rhetoric in On Function Words

清代袁仁林的《虚字说》对虚字的修辞作了比较完备和充分的论述,提出了虚字传“神情声气”的主张,从修辞的角度,对虚字的用法作了仔细辨析,对词类活用作了精辟阐述,对语境的制约作用作了精当论证,并据以训释了全书所收的虚字。《虚字说》是一部从虚词的角度论述修辞的修辞学专著。

In the Qing Dynasty, Yuan Renlin fully discussed the rhetoric of the function words in his book On Function Words, claiming that the function words conveyed ＂verve and tones＂. From the angle of the rhetoric, he differentiated and analyzed the usage of the function words, expounded their conversion of different parts of speeches, demonstrated their contextual conditioning, and, in turn, made textual research into all the collected function words. Therefore, we have reasons to say that On Function Words is a treatise on rhetoric focusing on function words.
