第二次鸦片战争后,随着洋务运动的开展,中国的传统教育也走上了近代化之路。洋务运动时期新式学堂的创立,不仅是洋务教育的主要内容,更是对传统教育的宣战,对中国教育的近代化具有开风气之先的作用,翻开了中国教育史上的新篇章。但由于指导思想的局限性,洋务学堂并没有能够令传统教育完成根本性的变革,未能担当起救国兴国的重任。
