This paper presents a close reading on the description and representation of "Foreign Lands" in Nie Hal Hua, one of the most important novels in Late Qing Dynasty. Using Imageology Theory and Narrative theory as tools, it shows that the textual representation of Japan, German and Russia in the novel are organized by different narrative strategies, which, through their intricate interactions, open up a new possibility for further interpretation. It reveals the deep - rooted anxieties prevailed among the Late Qing lierafi and the desperate attempts to reconstruct a fair self - identity when facing up to the overwhelming existence of the Western cultural" other".
