Shen Congwen is noted for his short stories and prose, and his comments on modern Chinese poetry were his leisure undertaking as an editor and a reader. But those comments embody historical and academic values distinctively. Shen Congwen＇s poetic theory is based on the close reading of poetic works with much attention to the care of people and the poets＇ accomplishment of personalities. His theory includes three categories, i. e. , the noumenon of poetry, the comments on poets and their works, and the studies of the history of modern Chinese poetry. All his poetic theory reveals his unique thinking and academic character.
