The Appalachian Collegiate Center at Binghamton University creates a gateway from the existing academic campus to a new hilltop residential college. Taking advantage of the hilly topography, the Center's dining hall floats above the site. This not only allows for expansive views of the valley below, but also creates gathering environments beneath, including a plaza, a coffee house, an amphitheater, and a rock garden. Additionally, a monumental stair runs beneath the dining hall, which allows the building itself to become an iconic portal to the new residential college. All of these aspects of the building, both indoor and outdoor, are designed to foster greater social interaction among the students.
