The concept of Yili was gradually accepted by Japanese when Confucian classics began to be introduced into Japan from the middle fifth century. Yili, at its early stage in Japan, only refers to the explanation of some phrases or sentences in classical works. After the introduction of Zhu Xi's Thoughts as a philosophical notion into Japan, Japanese scholars of Confucianism tactfully made some changes of it and transformed it into the basis of ethics of the society of warriors in order to lay a theoretical foundation for administrating the society and to establish the spiritual support for it. After the Edo Period, the concept of Yili began to be accepted by the merchants. During the process of historical changes, it was given different meanings, which later developed into the ethics of Japanese society.
