The Waves is a highly experimental modernist novel. Based on narratology, this article is intended to analyze the contribution of its formal innovations to the presentation of its theme, arguing that such techniques as multiple narrative voices, impressionist presentation, monologues and interludes effectively represent the precarious status of modem selves. Though the six narrators try to construct stable selves by the use of language, self-conseiousness of the narrative behavior leads them to doubt and undermine their own narration, and thus frustrates their attempts. The powerless narration of modem selves is finally drowned in the thunderous sounds of the waves.
