Hu Shi＇s advocacy of the replacement of the classical Chinese with the vernacular Chinese ultimately led to the new literature movement and new culture movement. His research and his exploration of the language study methods had a profound impact on the development of modem Chinese linguistics. Therefore, the survey of Hu Shi＇ s outlook on language is of great significance. This paper surveys and re-examines the basic language outlook of Hu Shi from the language nature, the language change and language research etc., re-elucidating his theory of new literature movement and new culture movement, reevaluating his historic contributions to modern linguistics study.
