先秦时期“军吏”指士卒之上的各级军官。秦汉时期“军吏”的层级有所下移,逐渐指“军将”以下士卒之上的中下级军官了。隋唐五代,“军吏”仍为介于“军将”和“士卒”之间的一个群体,但较两汉魏晋南北朝时期在范畴、作用、地位上发生了某些变化。
