Both Colm Toibin's The Master and David Lodge's Author, Author offer superb rendering of the inner drama of Henry James. Based on similar biographical resources, Toibin's James and Lodge's, however, are greatly different. One is self-protective, afraid of having his homosexuality exposed and incapable of love, yet the other is averse to sexual contact of any kind, totally devoted to art and deeply involved in the pursuit of fame. Although both belong to the genre of historical novels, Toibin's The Master has an obvious strain of psychological realism, while Lodge's Author, Author is a little weakened by its awkward handling of some factual details.
