The final dress rehearsal for The First Emperor took place at the Metropolitan Opcra on Deccmber 18,This occasion marks the final preparation after almost a decade of planning and creation.The curtain rose to reveal the steps of the Great Wall made of construction blocks 20 meters deep where all of the action takes place,Ropes suspending these blocks dominated the stage,accentuating the sense of Chinese landscape.The staging of The First Emperor has a clean effect,but in the end ,there was a lack of "aggression"in the design,revealing perhaps too conservative a conception,In relation to the sense of stage,perhaps the set designer only managed to accomplish a sense of "design"But what happened to the stage space?Because of the lack of movable apace,the director could only exercise his imagination above and below those blocks for more than three hours How can this satisfy an audicnce?
