Traditional translation studies has stressed the comparison between the original and the translated version, and thus regarded the translation as the transition of source and target texts. Yet in translation we can never neglect the extra-linguistic elements. This paper examines the relation between ideology and the quantity of translation, the selection of the original and the translation techniques, to show how the ideology functioning as a kind of invisible power controls the process of translation. In this way, the translator's intention of adopting some unconventional translation techniques such as intentional mistranslation, abridged translation and rewriting can be traced.
