Family and literature——On the reasons for the literary prosperity of Xie family

魏晋时王、谢并称,而谢氏明显以文学见长。这一点,与谢氏的家族背景有极大的关系。开创者谢安携子侄宴集,讲论文义,是文学兴盛的重要原因。而玄理的辨析、“纵情丘壑”的家风,对谢氏家族在山水诗中独特的贡献,也起到了不容忽视的催化作用。

Wang and Xie families had similar social position during the dynasties of Wei and Jin. By comparison, Xie family was apparently good at literature, which was connected with the family background. Xie An, the important founder of his family, took his sons and nephews by hand to hold family parties, discussed about the meanings of articles, which contributed to the literary prosperity of his family. And the family practice characterized by argument about and analysis of metaphysics and idealist philosophies, love for mountains and rivers also played a noticeable role in the unique contribution of Xie family in mountain-river poetry.
