Keeping Balance between Art for Life and Art for Art——the Discrimination of Literature Viewpoints of the Beijing School

作为中国现代文学史上较为典型的学院派知识分子,京派的文学观力避偏激,追求理性稳健。他们时常拿经典作品当作“试金石”,持守精粹、纯正、普遍之类的标准。在阐释文学与人生的关系时,京派既排斥“极端的现实主义”,又反对“为艺术而艺术”,试图在“为人生”与“为艺术”之间寻求平衡,表现出和谐适当的古典精神。

As the classical academic intellectual in the history of Chinese modern literature, the Beijing school tend to avoid extremity and seek retain and stability. They constantly take the classical literature works as the touchstone, holding fast to such criteria as succinct, pure, universality. In interpreting the relationship between literature and life, they reject both the Extreme Realism and Art for Art, with an attempt to keep a balance Between Art for Life and Art for Art, thus they display a classical spirit of harmony and appropriateness.
