Objective To investigate the association of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (K1R) genotype with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods Using PCR-SSP to detect KIR genotype in 93 SLE patients and 123 randomly selected healthy controls. Results The genotype of 3DL3^+, 2DS2^-, 2DL2^+, 2DL3^+, KIRZ^+, 2DLI^+, 2DL4^+, 3DL1^+, 3DS1^-, 2DL5^-, 2DS3^-, 2DS5^-, 2DS1^+, 2DS4^+, 3DL2^+ were the most prevalent genotypes in the SLE group (16.13% in SLE vs 0.81% in controls, P〈0.01); the genotypes of 3DL3^+, 2DS2^-, 2DL2^-, 2DL3^+, KIRZ^+, 2DL1^+, 2DL4^+, 3DL1^+, 3DS1^-, 2DL5^-, 2DS3^-, 2DS5^-, 2DS1^-, 2DS4^+, 3DL2^+ were the most prevelant in the controls (19.51% in controls vs 5.38% in SLE; P=0.004). Conclusion The difference of KIR genotype between SLE patients and healthy controls may explain the pathogenesis of SLE.
