Verismo is the Italian term for "realism." Its origin and inspiration were French naturalism and realism in literature. Such realism in art focuses on the lives of oeople in lower social stratum, their experiences in love, betrayal, even acts of violence. Verismo drama, therefore, is close to the people, as people witness realistic settings and happenings. Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci are perfect examples of Italian verismo operas. Their influence is farreaching; their instant success charted a new couse in music history.
