American Policy on China during the Prior Period of Taiping Uprising Revolution

太平天国运动爆发之初,美国政府由于未掌握中国政局准确的情报,没有形成明确具体的对华政策。在此情势下,美国政府既与清政府交往,又与太平天国接触。在美国传教士的协助下,美国政府随着对中国局势了解的日益深入,并在英国对华政策的影响下,逐渐形成了其自身的对华政策。因此,太平天国前期是美国对华政策的探索酝酿到初步成型的时期。

At the beginning of Taiping Uprising Revolution, American government had not formulated a clear and concrete policy on China because of its lack of exact information about Chinese political situation. Under this circumstance, American government not only kept in touch with the Taiping government, but also actively connected with Qing government. With the help of American missionaries, American government gradually realized Chinese situation. Meanwhile, U.S government referred to Britain＇s policy on China. Under the influence of these aspects, American government gradually formed its own policy on China. Therefore, it was the period in which American policy on China underwent from exploring and preparing stage to basically completing stage during Taiping Uprising Revolution in earlier days.
