The term ＇percutaneous coronary intervention＇ （PCI） is used to describe various procedures that can be used to mechanically improve myocardial perfusion without resorting to surgery. The most common procedure is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty （PTCA）, in which a balloon is inflated within the artery to enlarge the lumen with implantation of an intracoronary stent. Other methods may be appropriate in small subsets of patients. More than 1 million PCI procedures were performed worldwide in 2000, and more than 62,000 in the UK in 2004.
