Lu Xun's Exposition of Zhang Taiyan

章太炎是辛亥革命时期著名的资产阶级民主革命家、思想家,也是著名的学者,是鲁迅求学时代最尊敬的一位老师。太炎先生逝世以后,人们对他的评价各异,褒贬不一。鲁迅运用辨证唯物主义和历史唯物主义观点、知人论世原则,本着“吾爱吾师,吾尤爱真理”的精神,对太炎先生一生的功过作了宏观和科学的评价,有颂扬,有批评,有肯定,有否定,为我们评价复杂的历史人物提供了有益的启示。

Zhang Taiyan, famous revolutionist, thinker and scholar in the period of the Revolution of 1911, was the most revered teacher by Lu Xun in his school years. While people made a variety of complimentary and derogatory judgement on him after he died, Lu Xun, on the viewpoint of dialectical and historical materialism and the principle of ＂first acknowledging, then commenting＂; to the spirit of ＂Wu Ai Wu Shi, Wu You Ai Zheng Li＂（I love my teacher, but I love the truth best）, made an thorough objective and scientific comment upon the merits and demerits of his whole life which contained both eulogy and criticism; both affirmation and negation. His comment is a beneficial revelation to us when we make attempts in judging a historical figure.
