翻译是创造,是技术也是艺术——从“桂林山水甲天下”英译获奖谈起

本文从名句“桂林山水甲天下”的获奖译文谈到“翻译是创造,是技术也是艺术”。文章认为,翻译的创造性要求按翻译目的决定翻译策略,译出原文的语用真意;翻译的技术性和科学性要求译文客观求是和逻辑明确;翻译的艺术性要求译文讲究语言艺术,科技翻译也讲究艺术美。文章进而指出,翻译工作要不断追求高难度标准,以求不断提高译文质量。

Deriving from the prizewinning translation of the Chinese verse ＂East or West, Guilin landscape is best＂, this paper discusses translation as being an invention, technique as well as art. The paper states that to be creative, the translation should apply the purpose of translation to determine translation strategy in order to bring out the pragmatic meaning of the original text; the technological and scientific aspects of the translation require the translated text to be objective, genuine and logical; the artistic aspect of the translation requires the translated text to be fastidious about language arts, and so does translation of science and technology. The paper further depicts that translation work should always pursue high standard so as to enhance its quality.
