Oedipus is a well - known tragic character in western classical drama His life is changed because of an oracle. Some critics hold the opinion that the tragedy of Oedipus is caused by supernatural forces. Assisted by the theory of scapegoat, this paper analyzes the real reason of Oedipus＇s tragedy and reaches a conclusion that his tragedy is shaped by the power straggle under complex natural and social conditions at that time.
