Margaret Fuller （1810-1850） has been recognized as an important figure in the American literary and cultural history and is now regarded as one of America＇s first major female intellectuals. Like her male counterparts in the New England Transcendental Club, Fuller was devoted to her spiritual pursuit, expounding the motto of ＂self-culture.＂ Her notions of ＂Femininity＂ and ＂Sisterhood＂ gave a strong impetus to the women＇s movement. This paper aims at a critical discussion of her major ideas in the hope of contributing to a deeper understanding of why Fuller became the kind of woman she was.
