On Modern Popular Literature Writers' Views on Popular Literature

现代通俗文学作家阵容庞杂,不乏渣滓,但依然有许多优秀的通俗文学作品。通俗文学满足了市民阶层的文学需求,与新文学互补共存。面对新文学家的抨击,现代通俗作家既有辩解,也有自我批评,为通俗文学的发展起到了积极的作用,并在新文学家的批评声中主动向新文学学习,以谋求改良。许多作品中的爱国思想和平民意识昭示了通俗作家人生的闪光之处。通俗作家不都是封建遗老遗少,也有许多受西方思想影响乃至革命志士。通俗作家对自身积极有价值的作品,作过建设性的评论,反对因人废文。在通俗性的倡导方面,通俗作家比新文学家有明显的进步。当然,也有一些通俗作家对新文学存门户之见,颇多偏激之词,还有一些言行不一,不值得称道。

Modern popular literature writers were numerous and jumbled. Although there were literati dregs among them, many excellent popular literary works were produced, which met the citizens＇ literary demand and complemented and coexisted with New Literature. In face of the censure of New Literature writers, modern popular writers both defended and criticized themselves, which was conducive to the development of popular literature. They actively learned from the criticism of New Literature writers in order to reform themselves. The patriotism and civilian consciousness reflected in many popular works show the positive aspects of the writers. Not all popular writers were the old fogy of the feudalist society and many of them were influenced by Western ideology and some of them were even revolutionaries. Popular writers made constructive comments on their own valuable works and were opposed to tendency of depreciating works because of their authors. With regard to the advocating popular culture, popular writers did obviously better than New Literature writers. Of course, some popular writers prejudiced against New Literature with radical remarks and some of them acted otherwise than they said, which is not worthy of praise.
