The disruption of erythrocytes in hematoma after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) releases a great deal of hemoglobin, which degrades into heme and globin, the former will finally degrade into iron, bilirubin and CO. These degradation products have neurotoxicity and play an important role in the edema formation.
